How do kegel balls work?

Kegel balls help to strengthen the pelvic floor in 2 ways:

  • Their weight, which pulls them downward, triggers a reflex contraction of the pelvic floor muscles. The pelvic floor then contracts automatically to keep the kegel balls inside the vagina.
  • A mobile ball inside most kegel ball models. With each of your movements, this ball moves and "taps" the vaginal walls. This will trigger reflex contractions of the pelvic floor.

How to use kegel balls?

  1. Insert your kegel balls into the vagina. Apply a small amount of water-based lube for added comfort. The silicone retrieval cord should rest on the outside, just like a tampon.

  2. Wear the ball for about 30 to 45 minutes while going about your various activities. Walk, do your shopping, your housework — the essential thing is to keep moving!

  3. Once the time is up, gently pull on the silicone retrieval cord to remove the ball.

Repeat this exercise 4 to 5 times a week, then after about 10 days, do the same exercise with a heavier ball. Some kegel balls are part of a set with several kegel balls of different weights. From the very first month, you'll be able to contract your pelvic floor much more easily and see the results of your efforts.

A little tip to find the most comfortable position for inserting and removing your kegel balls: imagine it's a tampon. Squatting, with one leg on the edge of the bath, gold lying down — try different positions. Don't forget that, just like abdominal muscles, the pelvic floor muscles need regular maintenance: it is advised to follow a complete pelvic floor toning programme one to two times a year to maintain good muscle tone.

And to go further in your toning, following childbirth for example, use your kegel balls to practise Kegel exercises: series of voluntary contractions, for example between 40 and 60 contractions per session.
