Did you just wake up in a cold sweat (or otherwise)? You've probably just had a steamy dream. The real question is why it happens to you, and why you're dreaming about that particular person... Put on your thinking cap — we'll explain the meaning of erotic dreams.
What happens in the unconscious stays in the unconscious
By definition, a dream is not reality (thank you, Dr Obvious). But sometimes our dreams are so realistic that we can feel things physically, and even emotionally. You may have even fallen in love in your dreams. This can happen whether you're in a relationship or no in real life. In fact, according to Rahul Jandial, neurosurgeon and neuroscience researcher, dreaming of being unfaithful is extremely common.
Is it serious, doctor?
Erotic dreams are the result of ideas, or even fantasies we may have in real life on an unconscious level. They can also stem from totally random negative feelings we experienced during the day (the frustration and anger you felt when Véro took the last chocolate mousse at the restaurant at lunch). In any case, dreams are an outlet for emotions and should not be taken literally.
Am I obsessed?
According to Rahul Jandial, more than 90% of the population has erotic dreams. Across all cultures and throughout all eras, erotic dreams are present, whether one has an active sex life or no, whether one has desire or no. So rest assured, having the occasional sexy dream does not make you obsessed. 🙂
