Dangers of poppers: why don’t we sell them?

Last updated on

Hello, little night owls,

Very often in store and in our DMs, we are asked: “Why don't you sell poppers?” Although this little bottle regularly makes an appearance at parties or by the bedside, it has no place with us.

We're lifting the veil on the subject without any taboos, to understand what it contains, what it does to your body and why, at Passage du Désir, we prefer to give it a miss!

What exactly are poppers (and where do they come from)?

Before becoming the star of dance floors and bedrooms, poppers had a very different life. In the 19th century, their active molecules (nitrites) were used in medicine to treat certain heart pains thanks to their vasodilating effect.

Today, it comes in the form of a small glass bottle filled with a highly volatile liquid. Obviously, you do not drink a drop of it: you inhale its vapours. The effect hits within seconds for a two- to three-minute sprint:

  • 🔥 An instant rush of heat and a little shot of euphoria

  • 🧘 Overall letting go and relaxation of all muscles, especially the anal sphincter

  • 🪶 Heightened tactile sensations and a touch of disinhibition.

What is the composition of poppers?

Behind the name “poppers” lies the family of alkyl nitrites (pentyl, isopropyl or isobutyl). These highly volatile little chemical compounds act as an accelerator on your cardiovascular system by suddenly dilating your blood vessels.

Are poppers a drug?

It's THE big question. In France, according to the MILDECA (Interministerial Mission for the Fight Against Drugs and Addictive Behaviours), poppers are not classified as narcotics and their sale is legal. But pharmacologically speaking, they are indeed a psychoactive substance.

Can you become dependent on poppers?

According to current medical data, poppers do not cause physical dependence or withdrawal symptoms when you stop. However, watch out for psychological dependence: it is easy to get used to their little effect to unwind, party or spice up sex.

Side effects and risks: what to keep in mind

Even though their use is widespread, making your body sniff nitrites is not a harmless act.

The immediate minor (and major) inconveniences of poppers

When your blood vessels suddenly dilate, the body reacts:

  • Severe headache and dizziness (due to the sudden drop in blood pressure)

  • Very red face and a hot flush sensation

  • Racing heart (reflex tachycardia)

  • Skin burns which can be quite severe if the liquid comes into direct contact with the skin or nose

The more serious risks

In the event of repeated or high-dose use, the consequences can be more troublesome for your health:

  • Vision problems (poppers maculopathy): according to the ANSM (French National Agency for the Safety of Medicines), certain nitrites (particularly isopropyl nitrite) can irreversibly damage retinal cells. The result: reduced vision or an unpleasant permanent blurred spot in the middle of your field of vision.

  • Breathing problems (methaemoglobinaemia): the blood has more difficulty carrying oxygen, which can cause blue lips and premature shortness of breath.

Can you mix poppers?

Some cocktails should be avoided urgently:

  • Poppers + alcohol: Both lower blood pressure. Combining them gives you a winning ticket for a vasovagal episode or loss of consciousness in the middle of the evening.

  • Poppers + erectile dysfunction medication: It is LIFE-THREATENING. Combining the two causes an extremely severe drop in blood pressure, which can lead to a stroke or cardiac arrest.

Why does Passage du Désir say no to poppers?
