The little extras
It's a simple question but one worth dwelling on for a moment. First and foremost, I want to point out that lube is life! It helps to upgrade any sexual practice: masturbation, caressing, massage, penetration… Lube adds slip and helps to avoid friction that can be uncomfortable.
There are 3 main families of lubes: water-based, silicone-based, and oil-based. Depending on your practice, and whether or not you use a condom or a sex toy, there are a few simple rules to follow.
Let's take a world tour of lubes and their unique properties!
These are wonderfully gentle lubes for your mucous membranes and your sex toys!
Usable in any situation, whether you're using a condom, a sex toy, your fingers or your hand, these lubes adapt and provide a natural gliding sensation.
In addition to lubricating, and thanks to their high water content, these products will also hydrate your skin and leave it soft. Their slight downside is that they can sometimes dry out quickly and require a second application. So do make sure to choose a thick water-based lube to guarantee long-lasting glide!
The kings of glide! Silicone-based lubes are thick and provide a very long-lasting slip. Being hydrophobic, you can even use them in the shower. They are perfect for long sessions and provide incredible comfort.
Please note, however, that silicone-based lubes are not compatible with sex toys made of the same material: friction between silicone materials will create micro-tears on the surface of your sex toy, which could eventually damage it and encourage the growth of germs.
Vegetable oil-based lubes (such as jojoba, coconut gold sweet almond oil) will nourish your skin while providing plenty of slip. Perfect for full body massages, these lubes will coat your body in a sensual way, leaving a gentle scent. If you use a raw vegetable oil, you can use it to lubricate your mucous membranes as well as to nourish your hair and facial skin. It's an all-in-one product after all!
Be careful, if you are using a condom, oil makes latex porous, which encourages it to tear. And a torn condom = a risk of STIs and pregnancy. So let me repeat: no oil-based lube when using a condom. Also, for people with a sensitive vaginal flora, coconut oil and its antibacterial properties should be avoided.
Anal lubes can be water-based (and therefore sex toy compatible) gold silicone-based. The anal area is very sensitive and does not self-lubricate, so it needs a little help to be perfectly prepared for intercourse. That is why anal lubes are thicker than others and often contain plant extracts to soothe and relax the area.
