The condom is the most effective solution for protecting yourself against STDs and STIs. That's why, if you're under 26, you can get condoms from a pharmacy for free and without a prescription. However, there's a good chance that these "standard" condoms won't be the ones that suit you best. Our advice is therefore to choose yours carefully, based on the size and sensitivity of your penis. Here's how to choose your condoms, to combine comfort and safety.
Composition 🧪
"When it comes to condoms, we often turn to latex first. However, this material is rather thick and can filter sensations during the act. On top of that, it has quite a strong smell and can cause allergies in some people. We'd recommend leaning towards:"
- The polyurethane condom: extra-thin, odourless, and more resistant than latex
- The sensoprene condom: less thin than the polyurethane condom, but more comfortable
Size 📏
The better the condom size fits, the more comfortable it will be. Bear in mind that to be effective, the condom must cover the entire penis. We therefore invite you to take your measurements and choose the right size, without worrying about S, M, L labels — they're simply there as a guide (we now know that size is far from the only thing that matters, right!)
Lubrication 💧
"Almost all condoms are lubricated with silicone. Be careful if you want to use one on a toy, as the silicone could easily make it porous! Also, lubes based on vegetable oil are completely incompatible with condoms. Opt for a silicone- gold water-based lube instead. If you're unsure, here's an article that explains how to choose your lube. And a little tip: if you want to use a condom for oral sex, we'd recommend using non-lubricated ones, as the taste and texture of silicone aren't great in the mouth..."
You now have all the keys to knowing how to choose your condoms, and no more excuses for going without with your future partners. 😌
