Key facts about French people, sex toys and lockdown

At Passage du Désir, we're curious. So we wanted to know whether the current crisis had affected French people's sex lives. We investigated and – spoiler alert – the results didn't disappoint!

Do you sextoy? That's what we asked French people, and it turns out that just over half have used a sex toy at some point in their lives. Back in 2001, only 7% of French people had taken the plunge. Things have certainly changed, and we're glad to see it! As for the gender split, it's fairly even: 52% of female respondents and 50% of male respondents have used one.

Looking specifically at the past twelve months, we find that sex toy use has risen. In fact, 30% of French people used a sex toy this year. That's 5% more than four years ago! Then again, with those curfews putting a stop to nights out, you have to find new ways to spend your evenings.

Here too, women are in the lead, outnumbering men by 2%. They're also more regular users, with 13% using one at least once a month.

That's the percentage of respondents who use their toys together. When we say sex toys bring people closer, we're not making it up! Over the past year, 26% of you used sex toys as a couple, 3% more than in 2017. Spending 24 hours a day with your partner can make you crave something new... and we get it!

Although they're perfectly suited to solo use (we certainly won't tell you otherwise), using them together can open up new sensations, spice things up or even help you have fun as a couple when you're apart. In fact, more than 60% of women who use sex toys with a partner are satisfied with their romantic and sex lives.

Are sex toys taboo?

Talking about sex toys can sometimes be tricky, even with a partner. In fact, 52% of people who use a sex toy have talked about it with their partner.

What about the other half? Well, 29% say they haven't had the opportunity, while 19% don't dare bring it up. This is where we see the biggest gap: women are 12% more likely than men not to talk about it with their partner.
