Top facts about the French, sex toys and lockdown

At Passage du Désir, we're curious. And because we're curious, we wanted to know whether the current crisis had had an impact on the sex lives of the French. We conducted the survey and — spoiler alert — we're not disappointed by the results!

Do you sex toy? That's the question we asked the French, and it turns out that just over half the population has already used a sex toy in their life. Imagine that in 2001, only 7% of French people had taken the plunge. You could say things have really changed, and it's great to see! In terms of gender balance, we're roughly even, with 52% of respondents being women versus 50% men.

If we look at these last twelve months in particular, we learn that toy usage has rather increased. Indeed, 30% of French people used a sex toy this year. That's 5% more than 4 years ago! At the same time, with all these curfew shenanigans at home, you've got to find new ways to fill your evenings.

Here too, women lead the way, being 2% more numerous than their male counterparts. They are also more regular users, with 13% using one once a month or more.

That's the percentage of respondents using their toys as a couple. When we say sex toys bring people closer, it's no joke! During this past year, 26% of you used sex toys as a couple — that's 3% more than in 2017. Spending 24 hours a day with your partner does make you crave something new... and we completely understand!

Even if they lend themselves perfectly to solo use (we're not ones to tell you otherwise), using them as a couple allows you to discover new sensations and spice up your intimate moments, or even enjoy quality time together despite the distance. Moreover, women using sex toys as a couple are more than 60% satisfied with their romantic and sexual life.

Is the sex toy still a taboo?

Talking about sex toys can sometimes be tricky, even as a couple. Indeed, 52% of people using a sex toy have already discussed it with their partner.

What about the other half? Well, 29% say they haven't had the opportunity, and 19% don't dare to broach the subject. This is where we observe the biggest gap, as women are 12% more likely than men not to talk to their partner about it.
