Can you masturbate during your period?
Of course, and then some! For some people, period time doesn't always seem ideal for a little solo pleasure, yet masturbation definitely has its place during this phase of the cycle — let me explain why.
Why masturbate during your period? What are the benefits?
I've got good news for you: it's official, masturbation can help relieve period pain and other delightful perks of this not-always-pleasant time of the month!
Womanizer and the menstrual cup brand Lunacopine teamed up to conduct a study. The goal? To provide scientific proof of the benefits of masturbation during periods. This world-first study was led by Dr Christopher Ryan Jones, clinical psychologist and sexologist, and was carried out over 5 months with 486 participants. Safe to say, this study is serious business. And here are the three pieces of good news:
1 - masturbation helps soothe period pain (tummy, breasts, back...) and reduces diarrhoea caused by cramps
2 - masturbation helps reduce the frequency of period-related pain
3 - masturbation helps regulate mood during the premenstrual phase
So how is that possible? Quite simply because during masturbation and orgasm, the body produces and releases 3 feel-good hormones:
- endorphins, which act as a painkiller and bring a feeling of intimate essentials and relaxation
- oxytocin, which has a positive effect on stress, anxiety and irritability
- dopamine, the hormone of pleasure and motivation
And this explosive cocktail obviously has an impact on our aches, pains and mood!

How to masturbate during your period?
That's all well and good, but how do you enjoy yourself during your period without making a mess everywhere? If you're worried about staining your sheets, do it in the bath or shower! What's more, the warm water will help soothe any aches and pains: the ultimate combo! Using a waterproof toy, the shower head, or simply your fingers, you can treat yourself to some pleasure in the tub. You'll come out feeling clean and relaxed — what more could you ask for?
For those who aren't huge fans of aquatic solo play, you can just as easily do it on your bed or anywhere else by simply lying on a thick towel.
If you're only stimulating the external part of your clitoris, you can also keep your internal protection in place, whether it's a tampon or a menstrual cup. Easy peasy 🙂
NB: Of course, there's absolutely no obligation to touch yourself during your period. For many, it's a time when energy and libido aren't at their peak, and that's totally fine. The herbal tea, hot water bottle and sleep combo works wonders too 😉
Bye for now 💜
