Things As They Are
Photojournalism and the press, 1955-2005

The 50th-anniversary celebrations at World Press Photo gave the organisers of this much-coveted prize for press photography an excellent idea: they decided to build an exhibition based on original newspapers and magazines. They compiled 120 reportages, which for the most part are presented in their entirety.

This exhibition can be viewed from several angles: As a series of milestones in the history of the press, and as a priceless glimpse at how the information and ideas conveyed by the press have evolved over the last 50 years, both in their form and content. These newspapers and magazines plot the history of press photography and, more generally, documentary photography. This exhibition also reminds us of the defining events of our age, through images that have captured the
quintessence of the late 20th century.

Curator: Christian Caujolle

Exhibition co-produced by World Press and the Passage du Désir with the help of the Mois de la Photo à Paris and BETC.

The exhibition design of 'Things as they are' merits specific attention, for it will not be just photo prints hanging on a
wall: magazine covers and pages will be showcased alongside reproductions of whole reportage series, original prints – and sometimes variations – and screens projecting complementary documents (photo and film) for certain events. These multimedia features will make this exhibition an unquestionably contemporary experience.
