EXHIBITION
HERE IS NEW YORK

'Here is New York: a democracy of photographs' was organized in response to the World Trade Center tragedy and resulting unprecedented flood of images. The goal of the project was to collect, organize, display, and preserve for historical purposes, visual documents that provide the broadest possible view of this event and its aftermath.

This grass-roots exhibition started in two small Soho storefronts in New York City on September 28, 2001 and drew as many as 3000 visitors each day. To date, over 1,000,000 visitors have passed through the gallery. Five months after its inception, 'Here is New York' was exhibited at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. Through ongoing photographic contributions, the overall archive presently contains 7000 images of and surrounding the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Flight 93 and is constantly being enriched by new submissions.

By exhibiting images related to the World Trade Center tragedy, 'Here is New York' provides a place to bear witness to the events of 09.11.01. 'Here is New York' is a democratic forum for discussion of this and future global events by accepting related photographs from all who wish to submit them.

'Here is New York' is entitled ‘a democracy of photographs’ because the images on display have been submitted by anyone and everyone - not only top photojournalists and other professional photographers, but amateurs of all levels. Each image is digitally scanned, printed on archival paper, and displayed in a democratic style- anonymously and without frames.
