Exhibition
AMERICALAND, photographs by Alex S. MacLean

Alex MacLean has been systematically exploring American panoramas from aboard his Cessna 182 for the last 25 years. Trained as an architect, from early on MacLean found the medium of photography well suited to his desire to analyse natural and built landscapes. He has brought a deeply-rooted tradition up to date, building up an exemplary body of work recording the country’s development, the gradual evolution and sudden changes brought about by human intervention.

An attentive observer, MacLean casts a simultaneously sensitive and critical eye on the marks and manifestations of his urban society. From vast deserts to the scattered housing that sprawls across much of the U.S. today, he shows us a territory in perpetual motion. He examines the traces of things that have disappeared or been transformed, and the renewal and rebirth that simultaneously occurs.

MacLean’s photos have an impact that goes beyond their subject. They create a story line and generate meanings, allowing us to access the symbolic dimensions of a civilization.

Exhibition produced by the agency BETC Euro RSCG in partnership with the Ministry of Culture and Communication, Department of Architecture and Heritage.

With the support of Thomson, Nova Prod, Metrobus, Le Nouvel Observateur, Lagardère, Vinci

Cont'd

The script for this exhibition is by Gilles Tiberghien and it was designed by Hans-Walter Müller. With MacLean’s photos, visitors entered into a visual examination of the issues in land use and urban planning that will resonate in their thinking for a long time.

Curators: Dominique Carré, Elisabeth Henry, in collaboration with Rémi Babinet
